21:1834708Has anyone else seen this? A new website has appeared called
http://www.theratbook.com which names and shames all manner of unpleasant criminals, including terrorists, rapists, child perverts, and murderers. The website claims to be harvesting all its data from legal public resources such as media outlets and publishing the names, addresses, and photos of convicted criminals. The site says that we have the right to know if we have these types of individuals living or working in our area. I think it's a good idea in principle but have to admit I'd prefer it to be done from a more official source. However, maybe the lack of an official source has prompted this proactive "public service"? This site certainly has the potential to send a little shockwave into society.
What do you think of it?

21:3234711Unfortunately my software detected a hacking tool on this site and I had a real job to close it.

21:3634713Great idea Rick. They must make sure though there`s no shadow of a doubt on the named, otherwise it would lose all credence.

21:3634714i have misgivings about this, rick is right about it should be from an official source, this could end up with someone putting their neignbours name on it after a minor dispute.
i suppose that after the expose in our local paper about criminals being released into our midst here in dover without us knowing who they are and what they have done will encourage this sort of website.

21:5734718Sorry to anyone who had technical problems with the site, I experienced no such problems so had no idea to warn you about these things.

16:1034772In view of the malware encountered by Jeane and Colin I shall refrain from looking it, however I interpret this as........The Rat Book, aka Vigilantes 'R' Us.

23:5034828I had one of my websites hijacked a little while ago but it was easily fixed, fortunately. This may also have been the case with the Rat Book site which is why it appears clean now. Anyone getting caught out for not having a half decent firewall and anti-virus/anti-malware software really needs to give their personal computer security a closer look.
As for this Rat Book? I'm not so sure it's such a good idea. Law enforcement should be kept in the hands of the law enforcement agencies, criminals should be dealt with properly and the public protected. [Fuze lit and running for cover!]

08:0834829I agree with that Phil if the law worked properly - but it doesn't.
The Government has a responsibility for us all - to protect us.
As we've heard from Ed. about his sister and their problems, the Police can some times not be perfect (I do have the greatest of respect for the Police and know they have a very difficult job to do; but even when these crims. are caught, the judiciary fail us.
Urinating on a war memorial - another case very recently and the youngster had no remorse, didn't care what he had done and got away with it.
Paedophiles, killings by yobs of other people - young and old, in fact any act of violence is not punished anywhere near enough for their crime.
No one who has committed acts of violence (ie more than one), should ever get a concurrent sentence, it should always be consecutive; there should never be any cuts in their sentence for good behaviour, or time spent on remand. Life should mean life.
More Community sentencing for non-violent acts and "white-collar"crimes like tax-evasion, fiddling, or non-payment of Council tax.
As Barry has said many times, Human Rights, should also include Human Responsibilities.
Criminals should get the right to a fair trial, but NEVER receive compensation for injuries received whilst carrying out a crime - like falling through a sunlight.

10:2034831Agree with all you say above Roger, and I`m sure others do to. I often wonder though, if there were a few Charles Bronson`s out their, who sorted them out properly, if it would frighten a number of them into doing their evil deeds. When people talk about our `civilised` society, what exactly do they refer to?

15:3334834Rights and responsibilities are inextricably linked - I've said it countless times. For me it is a matter of looking at the desired outcome and how to get there in addition to a measure of retribution and punishment and social safety. Paedophiles should remain locked away - they never change. Youngsters who have an opportunity to change should be given that chance a maximum of twice, and then it's The Big House. Whuite collar crime is rarely a real threat to individuals or society and rarely merits being locked away. We need proper legal reform.
