Just been reading a news item here on yahoo, which tells us that the government is setting up a committee to look into the transport problems caused by last Winters cold and snowy weather. The most snow in London for 19 years, and the coldest overall for the last 30 years. So what? Other countries of the world have it regularly, year in year out, why don`t they ask the experts what they do? As I`ve said before on here, you can`t go buying a fleet of snowploughs and 100,000 tons of salt for a harsh Winter that may not occur for another 20 year`s. Waste of tax payers money. Yes people were caught out last Winter and suffered delays etc, but shouldn`t the private companies have their own contingency plans without the need for yet another government committee?
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

As you say Colin it is not frequent and predictable enough to warrant great spending.
The reality is we will just have to live with it in the rare occasions that it does happen and deal with it as best we can. No government can fix everything.

I do think that the effect winter has had on our roads needs looking at, though. I wonder if ploughing the roads was really that wise, given that we've been left with a legacy of £2bn just to put the pot holes right.
True friends stab you in the front.

I don't think the snow-ploughs do the damage Andy, that's the ice surely - freezing, then melting and breaking up the surface.
I agree though that the winter has left record levels of pot-holes.

I`d have thought in this modern day and age that the technology would be available for a tarmac surface that is unaffected by snow and ice? Again I ask the question, how do other countries cope who have it all regular? I really can`t imagine the Swiss for instance having an army of pot hole repairer`s.

No Colin; but then again, just look at their cheese mate!
