Yes Howard some of them were quite vicious and yet a couple of them were really sweet. The older nuns seemed to be the worse. I remember my Mum telling me that the nuns and priests at her school were even nastier, she learned through fear.

after reading about peoples experiences here of catholic education, how long do we have to wait from an apology from the pope?
would be good to hear from paulb and colette on what it was like the other side of the irish sea.

1951 vintage Paul. I was left back in the first team, but after being off for 3 weeks with yellow jaundus, Philip Dunford took over my position, and I became a reserve when I got back to school. With reference to Michael Howe, he sadly died in the early 80s from cancer. I think he was a purser on the cross channel ferries. He was only in his early 30s. His father, Ted Howe ran the railway club back in the early 60s. He worked on the ferry `Invicta` from what I remember.

Not sure on that one Keith. I did work with Charlie Howe for 3 or 4 years, and he was a great bloke. Loved talking about steam days without being boring. I have a picture I took of him on the pilot loco.

Yes indeed Howard the school system in Ireland was austere and in my view very violent. Not from the other pupils, but from the teachers. I went through the system...nuns from an early age and then as one got older, Christian Brothers, who are a half hearted variation on the priesthood. These Christian Brothers were brutal..a long stick was the norm. If you failed to learn something or failed to pick something up, you were unmercifully bashed and even thumped in the head on numerous occasions at such force that it would knock you off your feet. Nowadays you would have a lawsuit and quite right. Brutal religious system all round which nobody dared challenge. Fortunately that was as far as my abuse went...none of the other kind thank god.
But you can see why looking back how the priests were able to get away scot free with the abuse, and such sexual abuse. Nobody dared challenge anything, everybody was afraid. If you were excluded, put outside the religious system, you were sunk .
Two further things. Today I heard about the modern practice in schools here in the UK where the pupils have a say in who will be appointed teacher. Thats taking it way too far the other way. Clearly PC type stuff at play here, but...not good in my view.
also
Today I also hear the Archbishop of Canterbury here in the UK has spoken out about and against the Catholic system in Ireland. I dont welcome that. Its not helpful having a leader of another church sticking the proverbial boot in, and also its way toooo late and way too safe now to do it. Too little, too late, or a day late and a dollar short. Where were you when you were needed?
So overall...no not the happiest days of my life...

Interesting post PaulB
I went to an all boys Catholic grammar and apart from the violence, fights and dam good thrashings ,I never experienced any form of sexual abuse.I also attended a Fransiscan Monastery in Beaumaris,Wales and met some super young brothers from all over the world who were a credit to their order.
I find this particular era in the Catholic church very disturbing and it's not helped by those gifted with 'hindsight'!! making judgement some 50 years after the event nor is it helped by the Pope who has dilly dallied over matters rather than making harsh decisions.
Finally ,as a word of caution, American lawyers are now involved and I guess that a number of un-abused lads are now jumping on the bandwagon in the hope of getting a million dollar payout.
Sad days indeed.

interesting headline this morning on the subject of the abuse by priest.
it read "fresh blow for catholic church".
not a good choice of words, i thought.

I grew up thinking anyone to do with God was good and trustworthy. Bit of a shock me hearing all this above. Maybe if some of those sadistic priest`s etc are still around, regardless of age, they should be taken to one side and given the hiding of their lives, never mind a soft court case! Is this the way of the so called lord? Are the priest`s themselves brought up like this through the centuries to be barbaric?

I heard that too PaulB about the children making decisions on how schools are run.
Totally wrong in my view; children are at school to blossom out, learn academic subjects and work on a career for their lives. I couldn't believe some academic dip-stick saying what a great idea it is.

And if the school`s aren`t run as the children want, do they all come out on strike? Will they be putting in for more days off, or school holiday`s with pay? This country is full of dipstick`s Roger. Name and shame them, the whole rotten lot!!!

getting back to post 27 from paulB.
i think the anglicans were settling a score there with the candles.
remember the furore over women priests, the catholic church was publicly encouraging unhappy anglicans to defect.
i notice that Dr Williams is now saying that his remarks were taken out of context.

I have posted twice on my experiences at the catholic schools, and both times I was the only poster.
pleased this time the debate took off a bit.
Yes the Americans are trying to cash in, and stir it up, never the less there was clearly wide spread abuse.
It wikll take the church a long time to live down (if ever)

Is this similar to replies I get on other religious posting`s, that this is not religion, but people using religion for their own ends to commit evil acts?
