15:2611688Yes you can get gifts in Dover .My experience this morning in a family run business.Gift purchased and beautifully wrapped. The customer next to me paid by card and was politely asked to type in his magic numbers. The door was held open for me on my departure .A few lessons could be learnt from these staff.many years ago I suggested to Mike Webb you need shop assistants to go on an awareness training course ,never happened .I worked for Lukeys wine merchants for six years the customer was the most important event of the day .Even cans of beer if requested wrapped and at Christmas all wine and spirits were gift wrapped .Doors held open etc
I always reflect at this time of the year and its lovely to have a few days off with out politics ..

17:2111698Couldn't agree more Sue.
Various efforts have been made over the years, but either the shops have their own training packages/schedules or it's not important to them (but it should be).
I do think that the majority are O.K. just the few that spoil Dover's reputation.
Hope you had a good Christmas Sue and that you have a Happy and Healthy 2009.

18:1111705i do not wish to sound pessimistic or over critical of our shop staff locally.
however, over the last year or so there has been a clear drop in standards
are there training programmes?
it is common practice for staff to carry on conversations with each other, whilst "serving" the customers.
never used to be like that in dover.
why is it happening now?

19:1111708Tomorrow morning Woolworths will be closed for good and 58 people will be out of work and yet today they were as polite, helpful and friendly as I have always found them. Their attitude has been a credit to them and the company making it even sadder that we are losing them. I would like to wish them all good luck for the future and hope that they soon get jobs, hopefully in some of the outlets that could do with their sort of respect for customers.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

19:4911713I would second that, but support entirely what Howard says: customer service hardly exists here any more, people chatting, sometimes with people on the other side of the shop; mumbling, cursory glances, barely a smile in some shops, basic good manners conspicuously absent. A nasty shopping environment. I appreciate the insecurity and poor rewards, but it really is basic courtesy we are talking about. Customer Care is the first point of contact with a company and matters.

20:1611716i have never known bad service from woolies staff, even the weekend crew brought in were exceptionally polite and friendly.
does anyone have a personal favourite for bad service?
perhaps an anagram of their name could be placed here?
let us wait for paul to advise on this, just in case of legal implications.
