15:4835514What a lovely story in these freezing times (and no surprise, if truth be told):

17:3835520A salutory lesson: newer isn't necessarily better. Congratulations, Tornado - and thank you to her operators for showing true Christmas spirit.
True friends stab you in the front.

17:5235527Lovely! I love the steam trains - when I was a kid we used them so much, and always for nice stuff like visiting family - a good bank of memories all stirred up nicely with just thw whiff of steam and coal!

21:5135560Would be great to see this locomotive make an attempt on the world speed record of 126mph by Mallard in 1938.

22:4135564what do they say about progress??
i saw an exhibition at the museum of london back in the year 2001, it showed evidence that the speed of traffic was marginally more in 1901 than 2001 in our capital.
i remember when the M25 was being built people saying that traffic would not reach their destination any quicker due to new roads attrracting more traffic.
i thought to myself, how daft is that?
the north circular(a406) was at bursting point, a brand new motorway running parallel would solve all the problems.
how wrong was i, within a few months of opening the M25 turned into the fastest car park in london.

22:5735565You`re right Howard. An odd thing progress. Men went to the Moon between 1969/72, and never went back. And nearly 40 years have past. Pity we won`t be around to see what future historians make out of us in 2109.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

23:3035570it is a bit sad colin, those of our generation remember exactly where we were on that july day in 1969, the whole world was transfixed.
people in the third world started their journey weeks before so that they could be in a small town with a television stuck high up on chairs so that everyone could see.
i suspect that in 2109 the same problems will exist.
maybe then the big issue will be climate colding?
