20:3379516Barry W. What arrogance. Just because you do not interpret going to Uni as necessarily bettering yourself and just because you or your kids did not go to uni, does not mean Uni's are worthless. Believe it or not I don't think many people would like to model themselves on you.
I totally agree with you about the fools rioting, I do not agree with any violence. Are they students though or were they students being egged on by others. Your constant belief you can blame all Tory u turns on the last Gov is already beginning to fall on deaf ears, you can only push people so far and they will fight back. Breaking promise's seems to come easy to some people, with broken promise's come consequences.

21:2579527Gary - do you actually know what arrogance means?
Did I say Uni was worthless?
No - do read what I actually said. Today there are too many worthless degrees and too many kids are being sent to Uni - that is very different to your distortion of what I said.
I have also told you about employers experiences of many uni graduates, not a happy experience.
So you then went on about some mythical Tory U-turns, a bit mixed up there are you not, it was the Libdems who did a u-turn and broke promises faced with real life in government rather than as a worthless third party making promises it thought it would never be in a position to break.
You have to get over the fact that the last 13 years of labour misrule were an unmitigated disaster. Yes, we will keep remionding you of that and why these difficult decisions are being made.
If Labour can keep blaming Mrs T 20 years after she left office we can remind people of the damage Labour did up to 6 months ago!
And, frankly I am only too pleased if it causes Labour supporters great embarrassment - its you lot that landed us with the mess we are in.

22:0079537Actually what I thought Wilson said was something about '13 wasted years' - a pretty meaningless statement.

22:3079553I am 100% behind BarryW and Bob. It is outrageous that people are to be fleeced in orded to pursue education - it should be a right and free. But there are so many degrees in non-academic subjects - what's the point? And the many people more suited to alternative education in, for example, plumbing or sheep husbandry should not be made to feel less worthy or inferior - all education matters. Some are more academic, some are more practical - where's the problem? The problem is that the right to a free education has been shat on by Blair and now this multi-hued shower playing at Government. They should be properly ashamed of themselves, red-faced and yellow-spined with shame, unable to leave the house (primary residence or not) because of the weight of shame that pulls their feet earthwards, unable to eat because they are unworthy of the food. The opportunity to think freely, to follow an argument, ponder, conclude, develop opinions, debate, grow should be the eternal right and freedom of human beings, not a privilege to be bartered away by those who have never known or understood the hunger for knowledge or the thirst to grow. Bastards!

22:4079555Well I have got lost with who said what, as per usual with the political bickering and am too lazy to find out.
It is my opinion there are too many 'useless' courses that are of very little use in the real world, they always remind me of the old BT advert with Maureen Lipman about getting an 'ology'. What we really need are more vocational courses and a little less snobbery (if that is the word) about going to uni. I am not knocking going to uni, I just want the learning be more appropriate to the real world and the jobs out there, not a way of delaying the inevitable dole that faces so many youngsters.
My oldest grandson obtained his 2.1 in law together with horrendus debt even though he worked nearly all the time he was there. One of my other grandsons wants to study forensic psychology, will he ever get a job after his studies, who knows I worry for him.

22:4379556It is true that for some, university is a complete waste of time. It is also true that courses and entry requirements have to be 'dumbed down'. It is apparently possible to secure a place at Trinity College, Cambridge with a B grade in History and a C grade in French. Just 2 A-levels, B and C.
What sort of message is this sending out? If these places were based on finance or social status, god knows what would happen.

23:5379575Jan, my daughter got a Masters degree in Forensic Psychology and ended up in prison - but she came home every day at 5
I hope your grandson is successful, it's a worthwhile career but hard work and stressful.

00:5379578Bern,
If you think students have a right to free university education has the thought ever crossed your mind that if students get it free (education) then that means less money for far more worthy causes.
By that statement I mean if it is spent on them then it follows that there will be less for the more deprived members of society.
It should not be forgotten that when these "students" get there degrees they mostly all rush to be a part of society that tells the other half of society what to do. A clasic example to mention would be dare I say it, "bankers How about a bit of consideration for those who have no chance of university, but even less chance of a plain old simple job.
Have never for the life of me understood why university education was free in the first place?? there is precious little else in this society that has not had to be worked and paid for
My generation got free education but provision was made for those who did not aspire to go down that trail. There were plenty of jobs so the question of whether one was a have, or a have not, never really arose. Seems a bit of a contradiction that on the one hand student are crying "pauper" and on the other hand they always seem to find the money for drink and all the shenanigans associated with drink. We are witnessing the return of the "Thatcher factor" I.E. "No jobs followed by riots. I suppose it may make the coalition have a rethink about cutting down on the boys in blue, after all the did Thatchers dirty work admirably.
Dread to think what boy blue Cameron is going to do when social unrest explodes when he starts his social reform.
Another euphomisim for burn and slash.
I just wish some one would come on my television and tell me what would be the next step if Cameron achieves all his objectives.?? all the cuts are made as he desires all the services are "pruned" everybody is in there rightful place (workers under the ghout ridden foot of there lords)I.E. Lord Archer and the likes. Now there's a thought to cheer us all up!!
Seriously though, just what is the ultimate goal?? What is shangri La??

07:4479580Dover Girls on the March!
Ah now.. am totally proud of her. Allow me to gush here for a minute.. here's my one and only child Briony out there on the march demonstrating for all she's worth yesterday. Yes she's out there with the best of them and I am totally behind her. Im glad Nick Clegg had a rough day yesterday as he particularly chased the student vote, and they voted for him en masse believing in the conniving chameleon. As Jeremy Paxman said on Newsnight last night...he is directly responsible for getting 50,000 students onto the streets. Never before in peacetime has a politician swivelled so badly, promise one thing and completely and utterly do the opposite.
Medical student BrionyB demonstrating with below fellow Dovorian Emma Howson. Remember when your ill and near dying in 10 or 20 years time...you will be looking to the guys on the streets yesterday to come and ease your pain.

07:5079582Thumbs up to them PaulB - they have my support, for what it is worth.
Jimmy - this isn't about "students", it's about education and knowledge and the right to grow and develop. It isn't just about paper qualifications - we seem in agreement on here that some of them are dubious - not all!! My son is aiming for a first in forensic psychology as well and will hopefully follow in mama and papas footsteps!! But it is about learning, proper real learning.

10:0779597PaulB. Might I presume that the photographs were taken at the Science is Vital protest in Whitehall last month? If so you will be pleased to know my son was also there and might note a couple of points about the demonstration.
It was entirely good natured with no damage at all.
The placards were witty and erudite and not manufactured by the Socialist Worker rent-a-mob (who were notable by their absence).
The demonstration was on a Saturday since real students doing real subjects at real universities are, like most of us, working bloody hard Mon to Fri!
Hopefully, as it almost says in the Bible, 'the geek shall inherit the earth'.
