22:3041516Sunday`s the norm for bacon and egg breakfast`s, but we don`t bother much now with bacon at home as, smoked or non smoked, it always seems tasteless. Given up on the pre pack stuff, and even buying it loose over the counter at Rooks etc, never seems the same as years ago. I must say though, the Seasports centre and Mandy`s have produced some good stuff, (I will be trying other eating places about sometime). Are my taste buds failing me as I get older, or is bacon and all else not the same as it used to be? And, any recommendation`s for a good tasty bacon retailer locally?

22:5341519sorry colin, i think it is an age thing.
i find that a lot of food has little taste, i think it is just down to an old jaded palate.
for example, just look at the clientele in macd's, most are very young and clearly enjoying the culinary experience there.

10:4041539Try organic, Colin. Much derided and scoffed at (see what I did there....?!) but much organic stuff - especially the meat because what you put into an animal is what you taste when you eat it (think about it..) - really does taste better. The smaller animals, poultry and game etc, are clearly better because they eat better and generally run around more because they have eaten better! We buy organic veg etc when we can, but even I am not sure that veg taste better, although sometimes they do - carrots and root veg more than others for some reason - but certainly animals and game have a definite advantage taste wise.

12:2441548I`ve only ever tried the pre packed organic bacon Bern, but couldn`t taste the difference. Funny though, the taste of wine hasn`t changed at all over the years. Haven`t gone in to the science of that. Any explanation?

12:5841553Nearly all the bacon you buy at the supermarkets has water added to it; it's sold by weight, and adding water means more for the producer. Try dry cure bacon, it's expensive but you will notice the difference. Alternatively, the piggy farm in the Alkham Valley sell nice bacon, but theirs is usually frozen, and I usually find that bacon goes salty after being frozen.
If I'm in town I will buy green back bacon from Rook's as it's usually very nice; that said, the last two lots I bought from there has been distinctly ordinary.
True friends stab you in the front.
