As many of you know I have a love hate relationship with technology.
I just got a new Blackberry Curve which sounds like a great idea with its full QWERTY keyboard and a multitude of functions. After a day and a half all I can really do is make a phone call....
I cant access the web, I cant use the email, GPS/Maps, no chance of getting the SatNav working.
Syncronise with the computer, errrr, what? Software loaded but what on earth should it do now, it does nothing, cant get it to do anything.....
Right now I am waiting for my service provider to ring me back with a solution to the problem (at least the web bit), after 4 failed attempts by them to solve it.
The leaflet talks about 'simplicity' but I have never encountered anything so complicated that is so lacking in simple and clear instructions. If Blackberry are the market leader I dread to think how bad the rest might be.
So much of new technology simply does not live up to its billing. I have had phones before that claimed to be able to 'surf' or do email that I could not get to work. At the time is wasnt important to me but now it is.
Companies should not be allowed to release technology that isnt fully working and without clear and concise set-up and operating instructions, covering all functions, that explain the technical terms.

Alas Barry 'tis a sign you're getting old, a 15 year old kid could probably sort it out in 5 minutes. I still have trouble trying to cook something on my Wifes' state of the art electric cooker.

OOPS, back on the pc now and I see that the Blackberry's functionality is not as clear as it should be for posting. I didnt think I had posted that first bit!!!! Still better than nothing and better to read than to post clearly.
Just got to get GPS and SATNav working now....

Computers are designed to drive us mad. Mine refused to go online and I ended up trying to uninstall and reinstall the package. It all went horribly wrong and the Virgin.net helpline (at 25p a minute) was no help whatsoever. Helpline. Huh. Surely there is something in the trade description act that they are breaking. I phoned about six times before I finally got someone who knew what they were talking about. Gawd knows how much it cost me but I am now online again

Well I have now had the Blackberry for a full week and everything is functional.
Even the SatNav works well. Copied a few photos across today and a few tunes....Camera fairly good too but just 2 megapixels.
I have to say despite the trials and tribulations of setting it up it is well worth it.
The QUERTY keyboard is great, far better than normal phone functionality and I have made great use of the email functions.
The web browsing is not so hot as it takes a lot of time to load and there is an awful lot of scrolling. But for casual use when away from the pc it is worth having and it made a wait at the dentist less boring yesterday. Dont bother posting on forums through it though, that does not work so well.
Overall if anyone wants to replace their phone, Satnav, diary and a lot more too and get some casual web browing and good mobile email functionality you cant go wrong with a Blackberry. Be patient with it, its worth it.
