re: Dover Newspapers, some information
Dover newspapers on film at Dover Reference Library, Dover Discovery Centre, Market Square, Dover, Kent, CT16 1PH (enclose sae for reply), telephone (01304) 204241 or:
doverlibrary@kent.gov.uk.
Newspapers there (on film) (not indexed), include: Dover Express (started 1858), Dover Telegraph (started Nov 1833), Cinque Ports Herald for 1825-26,
The Cinque Ports herald was the first Dover-published newspaper, a lot of maritime news especially. The Dover Telegraph is very useful to researchers, started Nov 1833, about 25 years before the Dover Express (started 1858). Before the Dover-published papers, the main paper for Kent was the Kentish Gazette, published in Canterbury, started in the 1700s which contained not only Canterbury, and he rest of Kent, but rest of Britain and worldwide news.
a few other Dover papers (late 1800s, early 1900s), are also on film at Dover ref library
ie. Dover Chronicle, Dover Standard, Dover Times, Dover Observer, etc. Some of these papers include: Dover Chronicle 30 May 1840-Dec 1841, Dover Standard: 1901, 1910, 1914, 1919, 1925, 1927, 1930, part 1931; Dover Standard Kentish Advertiser & Colliery News for 1914 to 1919;
Dover Times 1905 to 1907, 1911 to 1914, Dover Observer 1896, 1898, 1899, 1902. When sending an enquiry, give as much detail as possible, certainly the date if you wish to find an event. If something is found in the newspapers, Dover Reference Library could no doubt supply a photocopy for a small charge (a few years' newspapers have been indexed c.Dover Telegraphs 1833 - 39 and 1850-51)
Kentish Gazette newspapers are on film at Canterbury reference library,
Dover and Canterbury libraries can usually supply photocopies from their films.
Newspapers can also be consulted at the British Library of Newspapers:
