It's not one of my regular haunts but I believe it has now closed. I know there was a leaving party in there last night, so that's that...for now.

sorry to hear that, a very large pub to pay rent, business rate, heating and lighting on.
difficult to make a profit with the overheads.

Even harder if you are an obnoxious individual as the outgoing landlord was

Don't beat about the bush Ross, tell us what you really think of him.
Shame though that another pub has closed, that's got to be at least 3 in Dover that I know of.

more than that roger.
off the top of my head the orange tree, engineer, the one in new street, the hare and hounds, the westbury, the one that is now the arlington restaurant, that one in snargate street near the grand shaft and one in tower hamlets that is now a convenience store.
just remembered the alma and the golden lion .

Sorry there Ross but didn't know him. Don't think I ever drunk in there. Once I think if I was honest. Just a shame that such a beautiful looking building going to waste.
The thing is that you can't drag people in without having something to go there for. If the atmosphere isn't there to start with you aren't going to want to go there anyway and that's without the attitude of owners, etc. You do have to put the effort in to get something back.
Just think that its a shame

The Landlord that last had it totally ruined it. Horrible man who really did kill of what was before that a decent pub. I stopped using it as did a lot of people because of him.

Thanks Howard - I was thinking of recent closures: the Kingfisher, Falstaff and now the Eagle. Those others you mentioned have been closed for quite a while.
Roger

They ruined the Eagle when they turned it into an "Irish" pub, what a daft idea that was. It's never been the same since, not that I used it much. Last time I went there the beer tasted of vinegar.
I don't do pubs much, but the building is lovely. What a shame.

I have used the Eagle on and off over the years, the last time being when Mick Murphy was the landlord. Mick was a member of the old site and was against the clock that the council were trying to foist off on to the Eagle building. Anyone remember that.?.
I believe the last landlord hated Northerners so a good job that I kept out.
He is beginning to sound a real prince.........
