00:0836477figures have appeared that show greece to be running a 15% deficit on their gdp.
many other economies in the new europe(i.e eastern) are in a similar state.
according to the experts this means that the big euro economies of germany and france will have to send brown envelopes containg dosh to these countries to keep them going.
thanks to our gordon we are exempt from this.
my question is, once our allies have done this once, will they want to continue the experience?
i think no, this is the beginning of the end of this fake currency, the recipients of this latest "lovely jubbly" will be expecting a repeat performance from our gallic and hun friends.
my prediction is that 5 years is the longest that the euro will last.
i feel sure that barryw and paulb will have strong views, allbeit disparate.

08:3536489The Euro has been under massive pressure and I agree, this fake currency will not last. This is what happens when you try to bring together disparat currencies and economies into one. Brian, you are right, Greece has been a basket case for a long time and keeping us out of the Euro against the wishes of Blair was the one and only good thing Brown did as Chancellor. there I said I would find something nice to say about him, though a bit late for Christmas.

11:5036500Well said, Barry. The concept of a European federal state is, and always has been, deeply flawed; it cannot be married up by simply bringing in an umbrella currency for all - like you and Howard, I believe (and hope) that the days of the Euro are numbered, to the time when France and Germany realise that their European ideal is no more than a bloody expensive pipe dream.
True friends stab you in the front.

13:5836516No Vic - that is more likley to lead to a Pro-EU LibDem/Labour Government that will take us deeper into the EU mess than ever.

14:3536521Can not agree on that one BARRY if U.K.I,P, get most of the votes we would be having a referendum within weeks and if the public voted to come out that is what would happen. All it would take is a very strong vote for U.K.I.P.

15:1936525you are dreaming Vic.
Two facts:
1/ There is zero chance of UKIP making a significant breakthrough in their own right. They at most can take some votes away from the Conservatives enough, in some places, to let in a pro EU Lib or Lab MP.
2/ You are risking too much on a single throw of the dice at the wrong time, if we were to go for a 'in or out' referendum on the EU there is too great a risk that we would lose it. I want us out of the EU too much to risk such a referendum now. In time, the way they are going, a referendum will work out well for us, but now is not the time. All that would happen is the EU fanatics would shout extremism and the public, however much they dislike the EU, will react and vote against an all out policy. More work must be done on public opinion before a referendum, the EU will sink itself, you can be sure of that and eventually it will be the Conservatives who get us out of that madhouse.

20:0536590the key word in barry's post was eventually.
means absolutely nothing, the public want a referendum date given, nothing less will do.

20:3936597Howard U.K.I.P. have already said it is the very first thing they would do if they got the power to do it.
