Britain's biggest unions put weight behind plan for general strike
Unite and Unison back mass action for the first time since 1926
Plans for the first general strike in modern British history have been
backed by the country's two biggest unions.
The proposed 24-hour walkout would be the first time since 1926 that
private and public-sector workers have co-ordinated a nationwide mass action
. The tactic, which would represent a significant escalation to the unions'
protests against the Coalition's austerity measures, will be discussed at the
meeting of the Trades Union Congress's general council this month.

Well that's a, erm,.............an idea.
Yes it's about time middle and lower ranking public service types walked out of their offices and managed to get a few breaths of fresh air to amply demonstrate and justify their union dues.
The proletariat will look on eagerly from the comfort of their sofas at news clips of the revolutionists warming their hands over burning braziers displaying posters shouting the words "Honk if you hate the Tories".
Great idea that.
I can see it now. The cabinet gathered round at number 10 listening intently to the nine o clock phone in with George from Tooting coming out in sympathy for the strikers because "Something must be done".
Dave casts a sideways look at Nick and His look says it all - "What are We going to do if the toilet attendants in Chiswick come out? We're sunk".

Union leaders are still as barmy as they ever were, sitting in their ivory towers earning seven times what their members earn. Fortunately the members have more sense and will raise two fingers to the idea of this lunatic initiative.

Peter/Barry
You continue with your anti trade union/tory ideas.
Most union leaders are responsible but faced with cutssuch as those hitting most of us as union leaders they have to protect there membership.
Now, lets get into the nuts and bolts of this,
Although at the moment it's Unite/Unison I suspect it will also be the RMT
Now, in todays age of no jobs, poor wages(for lots) and so much anti trade union laws and break up of so many industries to weaken unions, Apart from the RMT who will in parts bring London to a standstill, the support wont be as high
Not because of union calls for action, but more fear for jobs, and people just fed up with everything.

Peter.
I will always go for talks and negotiation, compromise, give and take and anything else before strike action.
However.
How long do you think these people have been considering this action?
Do you really think that they have not been trying to negotiate with this coalition?
You cannot treat people in this way and expect them just to lie down and take it.
This threatened action is nothing to laugh about, it is serious.
Some people have been waiting for this to happen with eager anticipation and I find that bazaar.
If it is not resolved before people take to the streets,no one will win this one, this will be no good for anyone.
And as for "sitting in their ivory towers earning seven times what their members earn"
We all know that is true, people are really not as stupid as you think but that is still a bit hypocritical don't you think?

The Trade Unions are led by out of touch idiots.
Fortunately a significant number of their members will ignore them and go to work.
A strike will do a lot of good for David Cameron though and that cannot be a bad thing. A chance to sack a few of them too will help with the deficit.

And hopefully Cameron will respond to the dinosaurs in a true Conservative fashion.
It is time the public sector caught up with most of the private sector and got rid of this malign Union influence.

Union leaders have a role to play, as do employers and the govt.
Barryw never dissappoints in his viewpoint on the workers and protection of employers.
David we may well partly agree on your last post
like gary says should the strike go ahead, with or without support there will be no winners
