following on from the open page and comments expressed there.
paul will disagree, but i find it is time to turn to a notable that has achieved things for his/hers own town.
yes it is boring, about 6 months ago is suggested terry nunn, involved in anything and everything that involves no pay.
if not him, why not the two journos that have spent their lives here trying to promote the town?
terry sutton and some bloke called graham tutthill.
this is not a criticism of political appointments, just that the role is non political.

You mention three very well deserved names there Howard. All three would be very good indeed. All have served the town long and hard. Im just not sure how the process would work. Outside of the political arena and manouverings of the Town Council there isnt a process. Im just wondering how we could bring this about.
I know for example the Mayor elections in London are full blown elections but thats a different thing altogether. Its a position of considerable power and influence, the role here is mostly just ceremonial.
Ceremonial and also valuing, recognising, or trying to, local committment and skill. Why shouldn't it be more open?

Much as I appreciate the nomination Howard it isn't my style. A few years ago I had an email from a very prominent person which was headed "Terry Nunn for for Mayor". It suggested that I should stand as a DTC councillor. It went on to say that if mainstream politics weren't my forté I could always join the Indies. My retort was that they were more politcally devisive than the others!
As for GLT and TAS, well I'm sure that they much prefer to watch the mud slinging rather than be a part of it. However it's done, secret ballot, old boy network, jobs for the boys (and girls) or general public ballot, it will always be political.
Being a Mayor is a time consuming and onerous job. You need an understanding employer to start with, a self-employed person simply couldn't afford to get involved.
Anyway, thanks for the thought but I much prefer to stay in the background.
Terry

a great pity, a check on the dover town website lists only civic duties for the mayor.
there is no indication of any political involvement.
i remember a conversation with multicoloured ken when he was mayor, he was detailing the duties and seem to involve a lot of award and prize giving, he was thoroughly enjoying an uplifting job.
looking back, jack hewitt would have been perfect for the role.

Hi
Being a Mayor is just not handing over awards and prizes, there is a hell of a lot of networking, besides the committments of their duties on the Council behind the scenes, its d***ed hard work, does not leave them much time for family life

Like I said:-
"Being a Mayor is a time consuming and onerous job."
I don't know how they find the time to do it.

I shall also be at the Mayor's luncheon (again), doesn't mean I'm getting involved though!

Jean and I will be there too - there's 11 on our table, so should be a good lunchtime, whatever the food is like (usually very good).
Going to the Travel and Tourism show at the Cruise Terminal first though.

A brilliant lunch yesterday. Over £400 was raised for the Mayor's goodwill fund. All good stuff. Annie and Le'arna were at their best, well done girls, see you at Hellfire Corner Weekend.

Which of you was more traumatised, I wonder ... he's telling me he doesn't remember!
I'm so glad it was a good time. Well done, all
