Ah well Bercow is elected as Speaker no doubt to the chagrin of the Tory leadership

I am not sure that this speaker has been elected for the right reasons. I fear a lost opportunity.

anything is better than anne widdicombe, the last thing that parliament needs now is an egotist.
basically, it means that the gentlemans club will continue.
i am now waiting for the next scandal, this will be about outside emplyment.
they always tell us that they work 20 hours out of 24, hence the pied a terre in mayfair, so how do they manage to write books, carry out their duties as comoany directors?

They certainly work no where near 20 hours now.
Since it became more of a 1000 till 6pm job.
Some late sessions but not often.

A reasonable start for the new speaker at PMQs. I'm surprised the Tories are so annoyed with the election of one of their own, says a lot about them I suppose. Party first, second and last. The people are nowhere.
I reckon I know why Cameron has had his hair restyled, the PM wiped the floor with him yet again in Parliament and he looked like a mop when it was over but the parting stayed in.

Bercow is a totally, and typically, cynical, partisan appointment by the Labour government.
They've learned nothing, care not a jot for the lumpen mass out in the real world and, frankly, don't give a monkeys about it.

mr bercow has been chosen by mainly government mp's just to irritate boy dave, who will sack him instantly after the general election.
he is a political lightweight that has a lot still to answer for.

Doing some very amusing postings across the threads Sid, making me laugh this end. Yes I thought Bercow did very well. Wasnt sure what to make of him initially. Its always a concern when you are hated by your own people, it makes for an odd situation. If your own people dont like you what chance someone else!?
But he was very assured and confident and handled it all better than expected. The pressure must be quite intense following all thats gone before but he seemed to brush it all off and hit the ground running.
Im not at all sure what the real reason is that the Tories dont like Bercow...after all he is a Tory MP? so baffling that one. Although I did hear he married a Labour activist who mellowed his right wing views under the sheets!

I don't think PAULB its owt to with him having a friend in the family who may be LABOUR although as BARRYW has shown, he does have hate for anyone labour
me, I talk to/work with/respect/listen to views from
all manner of people LABOUR TORY LIB DEM INDY NON PARTY
My view is,give him a chance, lets see if the parties will get behind him
if they don't we will get much the same
and no one wants that

No Keith, I dont 'have hate for anyone Labour'. I do detest the Labour Party and its, to put it kindly, wrongheaded atitudes and policies. That is not 'anyone Labour' there are actually Labour people who I like a great deal regardless of the party they support.
Sid - you must life in a different world to everyone else.

The Tories dislike with Bercow istems from the facts that he is married a staunch labour supporter who mellowed him into a near Blairite.
How his wife and 3 kids will adapt in their new grace and favour home should be interesting.
Marek
I think therefore I am (not a Tory supporter)

i must confess to being totally not bothered as to who is speaker.
i would think it is most important to the constituents of the incumbent, they vote in someone for their political views, then see them abstaining fom votes.
