If we're talking about the rich South East, what about those reasonably well off people who are living in France, Spain, Cyprus or where ever and are getting benefits - winter fuel allowance and job related benefits ?
If we want to cut out waste, why are we still paying these allowances ? pensions are O.K. if they've worked here during their working life, but incapacity benefit ? winter fuel allowance ? I don't think so.
I didn't see anything in the budget about cuttuing overseas aid either.

Figures show unemployment in South East 4.4% unemployment North West (Cheshire my birth place) 4.9% not much difference methinks. As for Bob he should get on one of his redundant bikes and pedal upt'north and try teaching the kids on Merseyside and see how long he lasts...

Oversea aid is protected due to UN obligations. A mistake, I would cut it, with the only such spending being done to further our aims in Afghanistan.

Again Marek and Roger, you are missing the point. The spending cuts will hit the north worse than here so their unemployment, already slightly higher than here, will increase disproportionally. It is right that help is targetted to deal with that specifically. What is right is that the help is being used to boost businesses and enterprise to wean them off of over reliance on the state.

i disagree barry, all the people on incapasty benifit and pensions should be given a lump sum and an extra 200 quid a week and encouraged to move to warmer climate.reason being less strain on the nhs.

I didn't miss the point but was attempting to address the issue raised by the thread title.Obviously the North depend upon public sector work and cuts will affect the area greatly. However this could be off set by yet more savings by 'shipping out' some of the large govt offices from London to the North.
For example Lunar House Immigration PEO could be moved from Croydon. If immigrants want further leave to remain or permission to stay then they should be prepared to travel for that service.
The prison service could be subdivided into regions.North,South,East and West and Eccleston Sq in the centre of London could be kicked into touch.
Obviously I think its important that the F&CO stay in the capital as they accredit visiting Diplomats to the Court of St James.
MI6 & MI7 do they really need a prime location on the riverbank of the Thames? Maybe another case for regionalisation.
These are some thoughts off the top of my head but it would certainly help soften the blow to the areas North of Watford.

Marek - the north needs private sector jobs, not public sector ones. Your suggestion would just perpetuate the unhealthy dependance on the public sector oop north.

Not sure where you think those private sector jobs will derive from? especially as we have no manufacturing industry -so to speak. My suggestion would cut costs on high rent etc being paid for at present on prime locations in London.

Marek - the whole economy depends on the private sector. The only wealth created is by the private sector. The public sector just recycles money, indeed even public sector money spent in the private sector is just recyling.
The government annnounced incentives to new/expanding businesses setting up in the areas that will be worse hit. We depend on these businesses of all types. This is why as DC says the economy needs rebalancing away from the financial sector and away from the public sector.

in think you are missing the point that marek is making.
money would be saved by moving public sector jobs away from london to high unemployment areas and also give opportunities for work where the private sector is not creating jobs.
I see the Child Protection Agency employs a 1,000 people in Hastings; I wonder what they do all day?
