The photograph above dates from around 1955 and taken inside the Westbury pub, at the end of Westbury Road, and the image at the top from 2 days ago, shows the pub as it is now, converted to flats. No TV in those days, the social life for many I suspect rotated around the `local`.

good photo colin.
when i first moved here the westbury looked like it was falling to bits, tried it one saturday night, it was like early closing day at lenins tomb.
the position was superb with all the walkers that pass it at weekends and bank holidays, but no effort was made to entice them in for refreshments.

One of the problems I`ve noticed about Dover since walking about again since last year Howard are the business owner`s, some are so enthusiastic, alive and bubbly, whilst other`s just don`t deserve the custom. One of the reason`s I tend to visit the same one`s, and just won`t bother going back to other`s. Just a smile and talking to all new customer`s like they`re regular`s can make all the difference. On the railway they call it `customer care`.

Spot on Colin, spot on.

Well nice to see that as you know I was born in Westbury rd, and used the pub alot we had a good dart team to,I think I know some of the faces in the Photo Colin but not the names, it was a big pub with 3 bars and a room upstairs.I can still see the old steam lorry, yes it was steam geting up that hill taking the beer to the pub.The good old days when I got my first pint it was in that pub at 9old pence a pint which is now about 4 new pence.

I knew you`d find this one interesting Vic, and I do have some names. Left to right, they`re as follows; George Braddish, woman in background unknown, Ted James (smoking), Tilly James, Rose ?, Vera Loakes, D Pritchard (my mum), Biddy Banks, Harold Loakes and Bill Banks. My father took the picture.

I used to live in Hardwicke Rd which is just a short hop and a skip from the Westbury. The great thing is it used to open at 9am which was very handy for us young single alcholic males after a night on the town at Olivers disco in Folkestone. Then we went to the butchers on the corner who sold great meat pies. Those were the days.

That was Whites the butchers and yes they were very good with the public coming from all of Dover to get their meat, in the end they went round in a van taking and selling the meat as they went.I would always get my dogs bone from there they would just give them away.
