20:3414806i thought it was the engineer only nigel, i may be wrong.
i went on a tour of the lifeboat station a while back and spoke to the engineer who spoke of the atmosphere on board during an emergency, and an engine problem surfaced.
he could feel every eye boring into him.
not a job that i would fancy.
i always wonder when the time will come that people are paid properly out of the public purse for their efforts.

07:2214823Interestingly enough Howard, I made the same comment at the Community Safety Day in Pencester Gardens last year to the crewman from the Kent Air Ambulance who also of course rely on collections and donations for the excellent service that they provide for the community.
His reply was that they preferrd to keep their charity status as to be centrally or government funded would mean box ticking and targets - the way they are they were free to run the service how they like - for the people.
