Ross, there is an increase in anti-EU feeling in the population as a whole and the next Government will be the first since 1973 and our entry into the EEC, that we will have a true Eurosceptic Government. Even Mrs T was a minority in her Government and was pushed in the EU direction by the old Europhiles, while the Party as a whole became ever more disenchanted with the EU. Now the Europhiles are at the disadvantage as a tiny minority and hold few prominent postions.
The Lisbon settlement creates the environment in which the EU can push its agenda further without national agreement than ever before. They are likely to pause for a while before doing so in order to digest the changes. But then they will start again on their integrationalist agenda and it cannot fail to further enrage the British public more and more.
All in all I suspect the Lisbon treaty will be shown to be the beginning of the end for the EU for the UK and other countries as well. It will be seen eventually to be the first step towards our exit. It may take some time but I believe it is almost inevitable now.
