since 1997 under Labour despite their claim to the contrary.
Independent House of Commons research has established this through re-calculating the crime stats to bring them back to a like for like compared to 1997.
This gives the lie once again to Labour's claims.
Barry, I am wary of statistics produced by the Government, especially on crime where a quick bit of re-classification can work wonders.
Last year the Government announced that the homicide rate was at its lowest level for 20 years. One wonders if this is merely due to improved medical response time and improvements in treatment? Perhaps without these a large number of the victims of violent crime would have ended up murder victims?

That's the problem of changing the measuring stick, what constitutes a violent crime, when you get results you don't want to see. Would the figures have been any different if the Conservatives had been in charge instead? Personally I have my doubts as criminal violence is rarely, if ever, politically motivated.
Claims such as these I would take with a pinch of salt anyway because a "44% increase" doesn't tell me very much without knowing the base numbers to start with. Nor does it say anything about improved reporting, detection or clear-up rates (or even if there have been improvements).
So what plans do the Conservatives have to reduce the number of violent crimes in the future?

The point here is that the Government having change the way stats are collected have been claimed reduced violent crime, this has now nailed the lie.
