Just back in from watering the Castle sSreet hanging baskets.
As per David H these are supplied and maintained by Castle Street Society. Following DHs request there are three of us watering daily (myself, Mike Mc Farnell and Addy Reidys grandson).
However the rest of Dover is bereft of hanging baskets or planters in Biggin Street
I know Roger W when BSM was attempting to get some "brightness" in Dover with planting. Also at a DTC Business Meeting it was indicated that maybe DTC would do some as DDC are no longer interested.
Go to Deal.Walmer or Sandwich and see the brightnees of their flower baskets and borders...I understand supported by local business and Town/Parish Councils.
Dover looks so dowdy compared with other towns that have good flower displays and does not give a welcoming sign to tourists that the town so badly needs for the town economy.
Its not too late to plant these so come on DDC/DTC lets make Dover bright
I agree Pat , Dover does need a colour burst in this lovely weather it would look great

Pat
Wasn't the floral initiative in town part of 'Dover In Bloom'? I seem to remember DTC were all in favour of this when Cllr Allt was Mayor; is that no longer running?
True friends stab you in the front.
No Andy
Dover in Bloom was for one year and the high street boxes are DDC responsibility.
I have tried to extend our castle st initiative but there are obstacles and any way the watering has up until this year been solely mine and it is the singular most difficult challenge. I see that Walmer has superb displays and am very envious - but then they have an energetic team doing it of volunteers.
Vic has said how he has plenty of flowers and Brian has the time to water so why donmt they both get together and do something. Simples.
Lots of complaining but less action than gets results. Without committed and continual attention there is no way that flowers will grow.
I still have flags to put up Saturday - anyone available from midday?

I agree with David H .A few more volunteers are required .I have said many times here in River I pay for spring bulbs to be planted .If everyone who complains gave time and indeed money Dover could look lovely .
The planting of flowers in the Precinct was a cut DDC made several years ago
There must be Gardners who have a few flowers spare .

I believe that Walmer in Bloom is a parish council initiative
Been nice knowing you :)
"If everyone who complains gave time and indeed money Dover could look lovely."
No everyone can Sue, and besides, as a council tax payer I consider I have already paid. Cut some of the councillor junketts and the money will appear!

Could the powers that be, in Dover, take advice and help from local gardening/horticultural organisations, and allotment societies, they surely are the ones who could get things moving and suitable plants planted that would thrive in dry conditions, in containers etc. They could at least be asked for ADVICE on making Dover more attractive. Just a thought...

Kath, when the Dover in Bloom thing got underway they curtailed shop owner involvement at the Town Hall, as if the Dover didn't exist beyond that point. Consequently, traders in the High Street and London Road were excluded. When some enquired about doing it for themselves they were faced with bearocracy inthe guise of Health & Safety etc.
If we are to get the whole town involved and not just a select area frequented by councillors, your suggestion for getting allotment holders and garden centres involved is eminently sensible and worthy of all party support.
Sadly, what will happen now is a string opf postings detailing why it cannot be done. Such is the way of Dover sadly.

It seems to be the same with everything now, everything departmentalised, bureaucracy and health and safety, and nothing gets done.
And he buck gets passed back and forth.
I expect that's why the guerilla gardeners started their planting. Hats off to them for getting things done.

Over the last 30 years, people in our small village have helped to plant daffodils all round the village, on the roadsides and grassy banks. After 30 years, they look wonderful in the spring and have spread considerably. We have planted three red may trees in memory of people and events, now very attractive, more trees in the children's playing field, and trees planted which were won in the best kept village some years ago. These daffodils and trees don't need much if any maintenance.
Touch wood but the village has not seen much, if any, damage or vandalism. About twice in 30 years a bunch of daffodils was picked (for mother's day) by a child.
Without effort you don't get anywhere!
Unfortunately, hanging baskets and garden areas do need watering and weeding regularly and people's co-operation - some councils are very successful in this.

i always have a floral display in my tiny front garden.
my belief is that people are uplifted when they walk past just as i am when i walk past an attractive display.
suprising how many people comment on it.
Do you perform the dance as well Howard. Now, that I might even pay to see!

It was noticeable, that the flower beds on Marine Parade were dug up the week before the Rolls' celebrations. I thought that the DDC could have left them for another week or so, just to brighten the place up, especially since they were not replaced for some time.
Planning, communicating and joined up thinking Diana. You don't ask for much do you?

Busy bees in Castle Street today.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.
