i seem to remember that the issue of an incident in the mid 19th century came up on the old dover web.
it was either a tragic accident involving a gun or an explosion.
that is why i took a wild guess.

20:3694636Yes Howard Sergeant Monger and Lieutenant Thompson were killed on 8th August 1860 when a gun blew it's breach and took them both out when doing drills at the Fort. There is a memorial in Cowgate Cemetery to Monger
