08:4611190Marek is right about supporting local shops, I apologise for advising people about Tesco's, especially as I have always said "use it or lose it".
The Business Rate poundage is indeed set by Government, but there should be something locally that could be done - I'm sure I've heard of initiatives in other Towns - first year, rate free; second and third year, just 50%; fourth and fifth year, 75%; sixth year, full rates.
Dover's businesses (most of them) are trading well below what their business rates suggest.
When the Pound-shop eventually closes, that would be a good place for Matalan - it's bigger than the Woolies store and would liven up that part of Town.
There was a rumour that JJB were in trouble and (not wanting them to close at all - Heaven forbid) if they did the unthinkable too, it would be great opportunity for M & S to relocate there and have clothes up stairs and food downstairs (or vice versa).
We don't want any businesses to close, whether chain or independant and this recession is hitting Dover very hard - in fact many of our closures were implemented before the recession hit.
