The closest to a pound shop is a charity shop, and the closest to an English ex-corner shop is a modrn kebab-shop!
Oddly enough Alexander, I don't think any of Dover's kebab shops are on corners.

Also, Sid, I did put 'closest' to an ex corner shop! It doesn't have to be actually on the corner, but is usually quite close to it!

brian is right, they are both on corners or end of terrace properties.
though i suspect one is due to the attentions of the luftwaffe.
I've never heard anything so daft as an ex-corner shop not on the corner. So, what is it then, a nearly coerner shop?
"Hey Jimmy, run down to the nearly corner shop and buy me a bag of gobstoppers". Have you ever?

I think Alexander is totally wrong. The closest to the "old" English corner shop, is now the shops run by immigrants, i.e. the Polish stores, the stores run by indians (who I accept may be second generation). These are the only people who are prepared to put in the time and the hard work necessary to making these types of retail outlet pay.

Well said Diana.Over here the little local independant shops are run by the Portuguese -they open at 7am and close at 8pm Mon -Sat and on Sundays 9 til 4pm.
Handy for milk, bread etc but they only way they can make a living is by putting a few bob on a bottle of plonk and putting in the hours plus you are always greeted with a welcoming smile. By the way even the petrol stations close at 8pm so finding anywhere open at 9pm is a bonus.
Marek
I think therefore I am (not a Tory supporter)
I wouldn't trust those Portuguese. Nothing good can come of eating so many sardines!
