NEW-LOOK CAFÉ-BAR AND IMPROVEMENTS FOR DEAL PIER - WORK STARTS
An exciting new-look café-bar and a range of other improvements to Deal Pier is on the way as work starts on site this week. This major project follows an architectural design competition, a public consultation and the selection of a winning design by a Jury Panel.
More than 950 responses from the public were taken into consideration and the chosen design is by renowned architects Niall McLaughlin, featuring a pier-end café-bar with timber frames, edge walls made of glass, and a range of environmentally friendly features. The construction contract has been awarded to Barwick Construction Services Ltd and work is expected to be complete in August/September.
Cllr Nigel Collor, DDC Cabinet Member for Access and Property Management said: "We welcome the start of works on this exciting project, which represents a major boost for Deal seafront, for the future of the town and for the whole district. These improvements will ensure we take full advantage of the potential that makes the pier so attractive to visitors and local people. This is one of a number of major regeneration projects that are being brought together across the district, and demonstrates the importance of this key asset to the area."
Richard Pollard, DDC Property Services Manager, said: "Continuing the environmental improvements to Deal seafront, the refurbishment of Deal Pier will provide an important focal point for residents and visitors. We do appreciate this will cause some disruption whilst work is ongoing, and we apologise for this and stress we are working hard with contractors to keep disruption to a minimum. We hope businesses, residents and visitors understand that due to the structure and location, the work needs to be conducted during fair weather. Public safety is of course always paramount, and it will be necessary to close the pier stem for some periods during construction, but outside these times, the stem is remaining open."
