21:5529305Looking at the lads at selly oak makes you feel, somewhat small. All the whinging on the forum is nothing to what these young lads have suffered.

06:4929310Couldn't agree more Guzzler.
I'm sure many people watching the programme will be humbled by the absolute bravery and positiveness of these guys.
But it also shows the price of war, a war that needs absolute support - from everyone (especially the Government/MOD) or it will be lost and those soldiers' lives wasted.

07:5029312Totally agree - what about the lad in the newspapers this morning who suffered horrific injuries just 5 weeks ago and was there at the funeral of a friend who died in the same explosion. In many ways they put us all to shame.

08:0129314What all this puts to shame is the government for sending these lads there to Afghanistan. I think it was Harry who made a very good post on another thread..saying that when he saw the people in the Calais camp he didnt think they were worth fighting for, as they had run away. Wouldnt put it quite that way myself however I can see where he is coming from... but as Afghhanistan has been proved to be a totally corrupt systme/regime the whole thing fails to have justification. We are clearly not winning, not getting anywhere either. Its like a bizarre dance..two steps forward three steps back.
So its wrong to have good lads suffering and dying in this way, although the lads themselves are amazing under the terrible maimings they face.

08:3929317So you would be happy for the Taliban to take over Afghanistan then PaulB and then for Pakistan to follow with all those nuclear weapons falling into the hands of terrorists. Airliners crashing into tall buildings is nothing to what they could do then.
I hold not brief for the Government but they are right on the Afghanistan mission, my complain is that they should have funded the Forces properly and devote more manpower.

19:5729353It would be interesting to see how much money has been spent on wars and 'defence' since 2001 and compare this with the cost of providing education, clean drinking water etc to some of these nations instead. What would that do in defeating the causes of terrorism rather than bombing civilians to death?

06:4629361To get back to the post, no matter what we think of the war we should be proud of our armed forces, they are carrying out their task in a professional way and they stand out as the best . I was humbled the other evening watching the programme and seeing the true grit and determination of those two young men of which I know there are sadly a lot more.

07:5529369There is yet another report on soldiers out this morning. Just been listening to it on the TODAY programme R4. It is quite shocking. 10% of the population of prisons is made up of former soldiers. 20% of the people currently in the criminal justice system is made up of former soldiers.. meaning those waiting to be found guilty, not guilty, waiting for sentencing etc
Clearly our armed forces have real problems adjusting to civilian life after they have been through the riquors of these foreign wars. In these wars they experience horrors that you and I will never see and Im just wondering just how much mental rehab they get when their time is up.
Although some are very obviously physically wounded, some are wounded mentally...and its not that easy to see. But is prison the right place for them??

10:4229380I agree Pauil, there should be much better support for our soldiers once they return to civvy street.
Those statistics you mention are quite shocking and is an indictment on the Government's (and the MOD's) treatment of them - support should follow them even after they've left the army.
