"“Not only does it feel like there is mistrust and that you are potentially guilty of something, but there’s also the fear they will be storing your data.”
She added: “I shan’t be using their self-service machines ever again. I felt violated.”
I wonder if she would feel the same if someone was using her stolen credit card and the thief was able to be identified. I assume she is not worried by all the other security cameras around the store that film her movements.
Tried the Self Service once, never again even if there are long queues at the others as I hate them.

Quite agree Jan. I have to say that I avoid the things like the plague.
A year or two back went to B & Q for a couple of things and as no till open was forced to use the self service. As expected, the usual problems ensued which meant I had to wait for “assistance” whereupon the guy there proceeded to give me a tutorial on how to use their system which I really didn’t want, especially as by the time I revisited their store I would have forgotten it all again anyway.
We all know that this is the “future” ( God help us! ) but when I go shopping I just want to buy what I need in the shop, get served and come out, I don’t need the hassle of the inevitable problems that I seem to experience when having to use a store system designed purely to save them money. Especially as you still often have to queue anyway to use the wretched things!
Thousands of people do use them of course and good luck to them, but they’re not for me I’m afraid.

My daughter and partner use the Self Service all the time John.
I would be quite happy if the store was to give me a hand held device so I could scan as I walked round the shop, then I could pack as I shop and simply pay when finished.

Some of them are a pain with inability to read certain bar codes and pull you up for having the goods the wrong side of the thing but I have had no problems with Poundland, their ones read the code even when it is on the side of the item.
M & S have put some in their new St James outlet.

I have never, ever understood why people use self service checkouts. They are an utter disgrace. When we purchase anything from a supermarket, especially the dreaded Poundland, the cost of paying someone to operate a checkout has been factored in to the price you pay for it. When you use a self service checkout you are doing two things....one is doing someone out of employment, and the other is allowing the store to rip you off. When we use one of these things we should be offered a discount of the factored in cost of not doing so. It makes sense. What is even worse are the disgraceful checkouts in Aldi, where the aged, and people who are otherwise slower, cannot manage the ridiculously fast speed.Shame on them.

I used to hold that view but in the end relented, comforting myself with the fact that many people are cheating the system and don't see it as doing anything wrong. I don't use Aldi but I understand the concept to be one of speed to keep things moving and prices down and as customers are made aware of it I don't see a problem. The Food Warehouse in St James operates the same way but I don't think customers are aware of it, a few times now my items have gone through and money is demanded of me when the previous customer is still loading up his or her purchases so I just stand and look blank.

Poundland have come up with a new innovation, they have put a very small chap with an American accent in each of their self service tills. Loads of useful information about putting money in slots and taking ones change before leaving the shop.

Not so, JB. While dippy Southerners continue to put people out of a job by doing the shop's own work so they can spend more time with East Enders (not I), the North is rising.

Though you have to ask, if '
delighting customers with our warm northern welcome is part of our DNA', they ever installed them in the first place. A mutation?

Some of the big stores are reverting back to having staff after complaints from customers

I suppose in a way the they have a use,
But like railway ticket offices, people prefer the human touch .
Wonder when our Howard first raised this if he thought it would still be a bit topic today ?

Oh dear, I've radicalised an aged P-in-law with anti-self-service agitprop.
Having filled a basket with groceries in Lewisham Sainsburys, he took it to the check-outs, only to find them un-staffed. He hailed an assistant, who offered to show him how to work the self-service. Politely declining, he requested the check-out be staffed. No do's, says assistant. 'OK', says P-in-law, dumping the basket on the till, 'put the $#*@ing lot back yourself'. Exit.

Love that well done to him, but a shame he did not make a lot more fuss so a manager had to be called.
