I find it fascinating that small groups with no democratic mandate feel so self important that they wish to shut each other up. The far right and far left are really different sides of the same coin but cannot see it themselves.

I was brought up to believe
a) that the way to deal with someone whose opinion you disagree with is to have a discussion with them and attempt to win them over through the power of your position and views
b) The more extreme the view held by your opponent the easier it usually is to demonstrate the falsity or lack of intellectual rigour in their position
c) resorting to violence means you have lost the argument or do not have the wit & intelligence to effectively argue your point

The danger is events of freedom of speech can have problems such as those mentioned, whilst the alternative view is what some may share, they often don't want to discuss, just disrupt.
I recall the clarendon and westbury community asoc (which is non political) invited all 9 cllrs to a meeting to see what there vision was for the ward.
It was just after all the problems of the far right/far left groups meeting in the Town.
Whilst explaining to one Cllr the committee's viewpoint on the demonstrations and the need probably at how best to organise such events if they must happen.
I was astounded when, after mentioning the problems/violence by far right/left groups that the Cllr was attempting to say there is no far left group.
I'm not sure whether the view held by that Cllr was as a supporter of left groups and felt the need to support the violence, or whether the Cllr really believed there is no far left group.
worrying though which ever it was.

Surely you're not suggesting that the other side was innocent Al? Incidentally I was there on the days of both events in Dover and numbers were roughly equal.

Absolutely not Howard. Surely the Police on the day of the Dover March should have banned any counter protest and arrested or removed anyone determined to counter protest? If the rag bag left wanted to parade let them do it the week after? I'd still bet a few quid which ones would have been the biggest pain in the a $!e for Dover residents.

Funnily my view is diametrically opposed to yours as to which set of thugs would have been more of a pain but that's what makes life interesting...

Agree about the separation Al but the Police were the only ones that didn't seem to know about the first demonstration and for the second one they wanted both sides there because they had a huge presence which would make them look good in the media after controlling things.
One lasting memory of the first fiasco was when standing by the Antifa mob next to the former County hotel and they were all putting on balaclavas. I will never forget the moment when one pulled his hand in front of his mask when I took a group photo!! Our local Green party candidate was egging them on.

Point proved Howard. I remember in sept 1992 a mob of these far lefties took to mobbing up and attacking lone skinheads that were making their way to Waterloo train station to be redirected to a music concert . We were on our way to watch our team play the entire train station was brought to a halt by the police trying to control the mob of lefties he'll bent on trouble.

And I have seen mobs of right wing thugs chasing and beating the crap out of people for the sole reason that they had different coloured skin.
It only proves that both extremes are full of mindless thugs

ANL in the 70s? That'll be me then. But I'm afraid I don't fit your kindergarten-level profile. Spoilt? I had two jobs while still at school, before leaving asap for full-time work. Trendy? Have you seen my wig? Middle-class? Father a bus-driver. Brat? See previous. Hamas were just a twinkle in the Muslim Brotherhood’s eye and the IRA were not my thing. Never wore a mask. No fisticuffs (the NF were usually hidden behind a police cordon

). Oh, and my friends and the people I met were mostly working-class too.
A sprinkling of factual salt really does improve a rant's flavour.

About time Facebook and others shut down some pages.
I can never understand why Facebook allow secret pages or groups, surely they are only there as they have something to hide.
