When I was briefly a member (but I was older then, I'm so much younger now) or, rather, when I 'entered' the Labour Party, the local members were more interested in tea and tombolas than Trotsky, and couldn't tell their permanent revolution from their permanent wave. All the young energy was sucked down, like ponies into the Grimpen mire. I left after a few grim months of facile front-room confab and fetid flatus. If the local groups are still anything like that, then they sure need ripping up. Odd, too, that 'local' and 'organised' are now viewed as negative by some; I assume the district Tories are 'globalist' and 'disorganised': they certainly are at national level.

Here we are Doris - figures from Wikipedia.
Membership and registered supporters
In August 2015, prior to the 2015 leadership election, the Labour Party reported 292,505 full members, 147,134 affiliated supporters (mostly from affiliated trade unions and socialist societies) and 110,827 registered supporters; a total of about 550,000 members and supporters.[169][170]
As of December 2017, the party had approximately 552,000 full members, making it the largest political party in Western Europe.[171][172] Consequently membership fees became the largest component of the party's income, overtaking trade unions donations which were previously of most financial importance, and in 2017 making Labour the most financially well-off British political party.[173]
In February 2019, leaked membership figures revealed a decline to 512,000.

The local party leaks like a sieve with so many long standing members/activists expecting to be hounded out one by one.
Dover or Deal take your choice.

Howard
All appears quite strange to me
Here we are facing a really unpopular govt a prime minister everyone wants rid of
Labour should be riding high instead we see local Labour members leaving what appears to be a sinking ship
With the conservatives in turmoil Labour should win enough seats to gain control of DDC instead it struggles to even get its members into the community
We could end up with tories keeping control of DDC by default
On the Mayor though is anyone really interested?

One has to consider the fact that the Mayor of Deal only decided to leave the party just as his tenure was finishing. Was everything nice in the party 11 months ago?

I wonder if these are local problems for Labour or if this is a national trend that we do not hear about, this is obviously more than councillors simply retiring.
Re #43, seems the Tories are not the only ones with internal problems.

I recall one conversation with a labour lady selected and elected by the Labour Party to stand for DTC
But was under impression once elected was then an indy no longer needing to follow the Labour rules
I'm of the opinion at town council level there should be no political parties
But its quite wrong to use political parties and there finances and canvassers for 4 weeks then become indy

Interesting that you say that Keith, the local party complained that the Deal Mayor hadn't followed party lines on voting. I fail to understand how anything that the town council would carry out would affected by politics.

The Labour group meets and decides on small things like who mayor is to be or small other items
These are democratically decided at a labour meeting
I'm aware some of our senior Dover officials have done same

Well they have broken protocol. Her area is Dover. It either the Chairman of Alkham Parish Councilor or The Chairman of DDC .DDC takes presedence over town Mayors. When I was in office they always deferred to my role.In fact Alkham is nearer to Folkestone.

Quite strange for the Mayor to go out into the villages which have parish councils.

Election time means grab all the publicity you can either for yourself or party
