08:2138107Nigel Farrage, former leader of UKIP who stepped down in order to concentrate on becoming an MP, has called for a ban on the Burka. This is not a new topic for us here on Doverforum, we have spoken about it often, but as UKIP have re-gurgitated the idea to the public, to the voter, the topic has been brought back to general life.
I myself dont think this will ever happen. Britain is not a country that would ever ban a garment worn in the name of religion, so Farrage is playing a nasty card here, appealing to our base instincts essentially on immigration.
Britain today, whether we like it our not, is teeming with multi-cultures. You have allsorts in the mix..Bahamians, Nigerians, Polish, Irish, Romanians, and everything in between. The nation is teeming with every variation on religion possible and tolerates all sorts of nasty political variations and demonstrations, so I think the burka ban idea will never happen.
But I suspect the slick talking Farrage knows that, but also knows the topic will be good for a solid block of votes from societies disgruntled voter. You hear the grumbles often..." they're taking our houses and jobs " and "we dont have the infrastructure to support any more immigration". All of which might be true but it also might be the just the proverbial urban myth.
Our local UKIP representative is of course Vic Matcham...is the burka a big issue on the doorstep here in Dover Vic?/ Is immigration a big issue on the doorstep here in Dover Vic?/ Would be interesting to hear. Has anyone asked that we ban the Burka?

thats a very interesting topic, and I welcome Vic's views on this.
Sadly this election will have an element of racist type remarks although very dressed up.
You always know some one has a problem with race when they start with the words " I'm not racist but,,,," and then go on to sound off many
racist comments, usually untrue as well.
I'm for live and let live, we have many cultures, I work closely with the Ghurka regiment who's wives wear very bright colours, not traditional
English type, so will they be banned next?
Where will it all stop.

08:3138113Governments have no right to legislate on fashion victims.
I detest seeing the burka on our streets but simply banning it is nonsense. I also detest tattoos, should we ban them?
These people who insist on wearing middle eastern dress should integrate or get out and go to live in a country where such practices are the cultural norm.

08:3238115Keith - where is the issue of race raised? It is not, this is a matter of culture, not race.

08:5138119I'm not particularly comfortable with seeing people wearing the Bhurka; I know the French are banning it in public.

09:4838120Schools Minister, the particularly non charismatic Ed Balls, staunch ally to the re-energised Gordon Brown, has said that this is is UKIP playing at "unpleasant politics" and went on to say that calls of this nature are completely "un British!"
So there you have it. The government would not entertain for a moment the prospect of banning any clothing to do with either culture or religion. The government of course governs a nations with a huge cultural and ethnic mix, the white only leafy lanes of Surrey, the traditional England if you will, is no more. We are now a ragbag of universality.
Farage though, is still appealing or trying to appeal, to those who still see us all as little ol leafy England. But the horse has bolted on that one already, and is away and galloping down aforementioned leafy lane. Might even trod on a Romanian coming in the other direction!
But although Vic listed out a long 'wish list' of UKIP aspirations recently here on Doverforum, try as they might they are still seen as a party with nothing but "Anti" in their portfolio. Anti European Union, Anti Immigration, and so on. The biggest marketing flagship opportunity they have, is appearing on BBCTV's Question Time, usually in the guise of slickly produced Nigel Farage, and these are his tour de force desk thumping topics.

10:0338121With all the fiddling, and incompetence in goverment offices, (ie student loans for one), there`s far more things to sort out first. Unless a bank robber, or terrorist was dressed up as one to avoid being recognised, I`d say leave it alone for now.

10:3438130For once I agree with Barry - banning the Burkha is nonsense. After all, you wouldn't ban shell suits, would you, and I think they're just as bad.

10:4138133I have no problem with this what so ever.In the sixties I lived in Slough .My daughter used to live in Brockley and now lives in the Midlands .You get used to seeing people dressed in their traditional clothes .We are very far behind the times here in Dover .

10:5238138I think I am sadly going to be out of step here with other views posted,
Ban Burkhas in the following areas
Schools
I don't think I would want my daughter being taught by burkha bearing teacher
Hospitals
Not quite sure of the hygiene situation but to be on the safe side kick it into touch there as well. How do they manage at the dentists??
Courts
Anyone attending court in any capacity should show their faces
Passport Photos,Driving Licences,ID cards etc
A total nonsense having identity photos with only the eyes revealed
Immigration Control
An I.O needs to ensure that the bearer of the passport is indeed the rightful holder. So a glance at the boat race is important.God or Allah only knows how the muslim women are going to cope with the airport full body scans!!!
Swimming Baths
The idea of women swimming in burkas is ridiculous.Maybe they should build their own swimming baths. This issue has already been raised in France.
These are just a few 'off the top of my head' areas where I think the burkhas should be banned for security and health reasons.Shell suit wearers should be given 2 years hard labour and made to go on the Jeremy Kyle show.

11:2238142Marek - I dont disagree with a selective ban in the specific areas you mention as for each there is a good reason. that is very different from a blanket ban such as has been suggested.

11:2438143there seems to be a misunderstanding here.
the face veil is the "niqab".
the burka/burqa is the body covering.
neither are religious articles, simply cultural in certain parts of certain countries.
having lived in a predominantly asian area shop keepers will not let anyone on to their premises with their face covered.

19:5738178I have been out all day just got in I have a very long email from head office on this one +I have just done a out line on that in open page for Mr SID Perkins,I will just tell you one part of this email the rest will come later on.Do I agree first in some ways it is a yes.U.IK.P.have called for a ban on the Burka and niqab in public buildings because,we as members of the public can not go in to any public building wearing a crash helmet.or belaclava or any form of dress that cover,s the face.U.K.I.P. BELIEVES THAT THE NIQAB SHOULD NOT BE TREATED ANY DIFFERENTLY ,especially in the heightened national security.
There is alot more to come and I will put moet of it on this post after i have had my tea.

21:4738192Frankly let people wear whatever they want to wear, having said that in those situations where identity must be assured then the niqab is a strict no no

I am always interested in your views as a fellow comrade.Could you go through my list of nono's and state your objections. My objections are based on identity and hygiene coupled with common courtesy and manners. Not on religious or racist based views.
Cheers
