Council Leader Takes Stand Against Open Prison For Connaught Barracks Site

Friday, 15 September 2006
The Leader of Dover District Council has taken a stand against 'unwelcome' and 'inappropriate' proposals following media reports that the Home Office is considering using the Connaught Barracks site as an open prison.

Cllr Paul Watkins, the Leader of Dover District Council, is writing a letter expressing concerns to the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary.

Cllr Paul Watkins, Leader of Dover District Council, said "The proposals that have been reported are unwelcome. It would not seem appropriate to locate an open prison next door to a housing estate with a primary school and opposite one of the UK's top tourist attractions at Dover Castle. The Council has been actively engaged in discussing regeneration and housing options at this site and these proposals undermine that. At this time, Dover is enjoying an uplift in confidence with regeneration projects taking effect and there is a growing optimism. These proposals send out all the wrong messages and have angered the people of Guston and will worry the community of Dover. It must not happen.
