DDC Seek Further Assurance Over Primary School Reorganisation

Sunday, 12 November 2006
Dover District Council has sought further assurances in response to Kent County Council's proposals for the reorganisation of Primary Schools in the area. Following an initial submission in July 2006 from Dover District Council, a reply was received from KCC in October 2006. Following cross party discussions, Cabinet has agreed a number of issues on which further responses are sought. A letter containing these points has been forwarded to KCC to meet their consultation deadline.

The letter from the Leader of Dover District Council raises a number of issues, including the use of local statistical data, the role of schools as community assets, accessibility, including the potential impact on distance to travel and compliance with the Disability and Discrimination Act, long-term viability, the impact on deprived communities and the impact on children of relocating.

Cllr Paul Watkins, Leader of Dover District Council said: "We have a very serious issue here that has a very direct affect on local communities. Whilst we recognise the financing and educational pressures on Kent County Council, we do have a number of issues that we want them to address. We have not mentioned individual schools, which is a matter for individual Ward Councillors. We have raised general principles which, if not properly addressed, may be looked at by the Adjudications Officer."
