A memorial to Merchant Navy seamen who lost their lives at sea has been supported by the Chairman of Dover District Council, Cllr Pat Heath. Cllr Heath presented a cheque for £1,000 to the Chairman of the Kent Branch of the Merchant Navy Association, Donald Hunter, on Dover seafront last week.
Cllr Pat Heath said: "Congratulations go to Donald Hunter on all the work that has taken place in raising funds, and it is a pleasure to be able to support work to build a lasting memorial to those in the Merchant Navy who gave their lives."
Cllr Heath, with the Kent Branch of the Merchant Navy Association, is also organising a special service at Dover Town Hall to mark National Merchant Navy Day on Monday 4 September and all are welcome to attend.
Dover Town Hall will open at 10am and standard bearers will arrive and congregate around 10.25am by the side of the Town Hall, or in Connaught Hall in the event of wet weather. Standard bearers will enter the Town Hall at 10.30am and the Service of Celebration will begin at 10.35am, followed by an address from the Chairman of the Kent Branch of the Merchant Navy Association and a closing address from the Chairman of Dover District Council.
