Swiss driver Frank Rinderknecht is claiming a world record after completing the first crossing of the Channel in a hydrofoil car.
Mr Rinderknecht drove the vehicle ashore at Sangatte on the French coast three hours and 13 minutes after entering the water at Dover Harbour.
He had hoped to beat the record time of one hour 40 minutes set by Sir Richard Branson for a crossing by an amphibious vehicle two years ago, but said his main aim was to reach France safely.
However, Mr Rinderknecht is claiming that he has set a record for the first crossing by a hydrofoil car.
The specially-designed Rinspeed vehicle has a two-cylinder 750cc engine, with 160 horse power and can do 120 miles an hour on land and 16 knots in the water.
