Dover Carnival Association Limited has been invited to participate in the creation of the National Carnival Archive. The archive will be based in a purpose built UK Centre for Carnival Arts in Luton, and is being funded by Arts Council England, European Regional Development Trust, East of England Development Agency and Luton Borough Council. The centre is due to open later this year and will provide master classes in drumming and dance for carnival groups and entrants, educational programmes for people of all ages, and the National Archive.
Director, Sid Perkins, said: "It is an honour for Dover and DCAL to be invited to take part in the National Carnival Archive. We are also very excited about the opportunities the UK Centre of Carnival Arts may present for us and the town. Through the UK Centre we will put ourselves in the position of gaining international recognition for Dover carnival, and, hopefully, expanding the impact of carnival on the town and it's businesses.
"This development also opens up the opportunity for us to create a true Rio style carnival atmosphere for our annual event with local schools and groups competing for the new 'Rio Cup'. DCAL will be seeking a sponsor for the trophy and local partners to bring educational and Master classes to Dover, in order to help teach carnival dress design, dance and music to the local schools who want to enter for the Rio Cup, in collaboration with the UK Centre of Carnival Arts."
The Selection Event for Miss Dover 2007 and her Courts takes place on Sunday, April 29th at Dover Town Hall. Doors open at 1pm.
