Pupils Help Kick Off Countdown To Going Smokefree On 1 July

Friday, 16 March 2007
Prize-winning pupils from across the district helped kick off the countdown to going smokefree at a special roadshow at Dover Market Square on National No Smoking Day on Wednesday 14 March.

Dover District Council, working with partners from the NHS Stop Smoking Service and the Kent Fire Service, hosted the Smokefree roadshow earlier this week. The roadshow launched a campaign to keep people in the district informed about the national smokefree legislation taking effect from 1 July. DDC's Environmental Health team held a special competition with local schools to design posters for the campaign, and the six winners were presented with prizes at the event.

The winning posters were drawn by: Megan Terris from Sandown Primary School; Nicole Savage from Charlton Primary School; Gemma Lawson, Haydon Butcher and Kye Clark from the Whitfield and Aspen School; and Ryan Littler-Laing from the Downs Primary School.

Experts were on hand at the roadshow all day to provide full information about the new legislation, and about the dangers of smoking. Smokefree legislation will make it an offence to smoke in virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England from 1 July. The enforcement of the legislation in the district is the responsibility of DDC's Environmental Health team.
