Young People Lead The Way - Local Democracy Week 2007

Thursday, 11 October 2007
Pupils from secondary schools across the district will get the chance to debate in the Dover District Council Chamber and quiz Councillors as part of a day of activities on Wednesday 17 October, in support of Local Democracy Week.

The seventh in a series of popular annual days is being organised by Dover District Council's Democratic Support team as part of national Local Democracy Week. Pupils are attending from Archers Court Maths and Computing College, Castle Community School, Dover Grammar School For Boys, Dover Grammar School For Girls, Sandwich Technology School and Walmer School. Students will hear from Councillors about their role and the importance of participating in Local Government. The day will also feature lively debates on the voting age, and crime levels, finishing with a fun session where pupils have the opportunity to quiz Councillors on their work and views.

Cllr Mrs Julie Rook, DDC Cabinet Member for Citizenship, said: "We continue to work hard to listen to young people and to give them a real voice in how we move forward for the future. We are looking forward to hosting this event again this year. This is a great chance to help young people get involved in democracy and it is always encouraging to see pupils taking such an active interest in the decision making process."
