Benefit Fraud

Monday, 10 November 2008
Sherry Ward, 34, of Kimberley Walk, Dover appeared at Canterbury Crown Court on 4 November having been committed for sentence by Folkestone Magistrates Court on 29 September, where she had pleaded guilty to two offences of benefit fraud involving Dover District Council and the Department for Work and Pensions.

Ms Ward was sentenced to 8 months imprisonment, suspended for 2 years, with a Supervision Order for 12 months, during which time there is a requirement to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work. She had failed to notify the Council and the DWP that her partner lived at her address. The overpayment of benefit from DDC and the DWP was around £15,000.

A Compensation Order was made in favour of the DWP. DDC and the DWP will recover the overpaid benefit paid.
