Major Recycling Expansion Ready To Launch

Monday, 20 October 2008
A major expansion of the recycling service from Dover District Council, with the collection of cardboard and plastic bottles, is ready to launch from 3 November, and leaflets, bags and calendars are now being delivered to households across the district.

Blue bags and full details of the new waste collection service are currently being distributed, and will take around two weeks to complete. The blue bag will be for the collection of paper, cardboard boxes and packaging, allowing the black box to be used for plastic bottles, cans, glass bottles and jars.

The new recycling lorries have two compartments, and residents are asked to keep their paper and cardboard in the blue bag, and plastic bottles, cans and glass in the black box. Households will no longer have to separate recycling into carrier bags, which is better for the environment.

To enable collections to operate as efficiently as possible, there have been some changes to waste collection days for refuse, black box and green waste. DDC asks that all residents look out for this important information, which is currently being delivered with the new blue bag, as your collection days may be changing.

This is an expansion of existing collections to households across the district. Household refuse collections remain on a weekly basis and recycling collections remain fortnightly. The green waste scheme for the collection of garden waste is also being extended to include another 13,000 homes across the area.

Cllr Nicholas Kenton, Cabinet Member for Environment, Waste and Planning said: "This exciting news represents a major expansion of the service from DDC. Residents have been consistently telling us they want to see plastic and cardboard collections, and we are delighted to be able to introduce this. We are working hard to keep people informed of these important changes, including changes to collection days, which will help us work together to continue to recycle more and protect the environment for the future."
