A man from Eire has been charged with the attempted importation of approximately 35kgs of Amphetamine at Dover's Eastern Docks over the weekend. The drugs have an estimated street value of £350,000.
On Saturday 2 May 2009, Justin McCabe, 34, from Co. Kildare, Eire was stopped by UK Border Agency (UKBA) Officers at the Inward Freight Controls. After questioning McCabe officers searched the vehicle and its trailer and found the amphetamine hidden within the load of post.
Following the detection, the case was passed to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) investigation officers to continue enquiries. McCabe was interviewed and subsequently charged with being knowingly concerned in the fraudulent evasion or attempted evasion of the prohibition on importation imposed by section 3(1) of the Misuse of Drug Act 1971.
McCabe appeared at Dover Magistrates on Monday (4 May 2009) where he withheld a plea, was remanded in custody and will reappear at Dover Magistrates tomorrow (Thursday 7 May 2009).
Bob Gaiger, HM Revenue & Customs Dover spokesman said:
"HMRC together with UKBA play a vital role in the fight to prevent illegal drugs from entering the UK and in protecting our communities from the violence and corruption that always accompany this hideous trade. Anyone with information about activity they suspect may be linked to drugs smuggling should call our 24 hour Customs Hotline - 0800 59 5000."
