More than 8,000 people of all ages have enjoyed the chance to have fun and feel alive at three amazing free events this summer from Active Dover - including the fantastic Get Wet day held at Pencester Gardens in Dover on Saturday (18 July).
More than 5,000 came along to Pencester Gardens to enjoy a range of activities, including swimming, sailing, windsurfing, rowing, walking, rock climbing, skating and bmx, gymnastics, dance and fitness, cheerleading, football, and a variety of other attractions, including the popular Games Zone. There was also information on a range of subjects from kayaking to sea angling and scuba diving, and a range of stands and displays, including Age Concern and the NHS Stop Smoking Service.
A major part of the day was also to promote the Government's free swimming campaign, led locally by Vista Leisure, which is offering free swimming to people aged 60 and over for 2 years, and there are also some opportunities for people of other ages to get discounted swimming lessons with support funding from the PCT.
The day was the last in a series of events organized by Active Dover as part of Feel Alive 2009. This included successful events at Fowlmead Park on 25 May and Victoria Park/Tides Leisure Centre in Deal on 6 June. Active Dover is a new partnership aimed at ensuring you have plenty of ways to keep fit, healthy and stay active, no matter what your age. Active Dover is made up of a range of partners in the community.
Sarah Philpott, Event Organiser and Sports Development Officer at Dover District Council said: "The aim of the events is simply to encourage and show people how to 'get up, get out, get active and feel alive!' The event complements the national campaign called 'change for life' which is all about supporting people to 'move more, eat well and live longer.'"
