2 Million Cigarettes Seized At Port

Thursday, 29 July 2010
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) officers are carrying out an investigation following the discovery of at least 2.2 million cigarettes hidden in a lorry at Dover Ferry Port.

The lorry was searched at Dover's Eastern Docks after it had been driven off a ferry from France on Monday, 26 July 2010. The cigarettes were found within white plastic bags - the size of bales of hay. The driver of the lorry, a 46 year-old man from Greece, was arrested, interviewed and subsequently released on bail pending further enquiries. The duty evaded on the goods is estimated to be about £500,000.

Bob Gaiger, HM Revenue & Customs spokesman in the South East said: "Cigarette and tobacco smuggling is not a harmless tax fiddle. It harms honest businesses and costs the UK billions of pounds in lost revenue that ends up lining the pockets of criminals instead of funding vital public services. Anyone with information about illegal smuggling activities should call the Customs' Hotline on 0800 59 5000 or email customs.hotline@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk."
