Dover District Council is reminding residents that the annual canvass for the Register of Electors is currently taking place - and every residential property in the district should now have received a form to update the register that should be checked.
It is particularly important that residents respond promptly to ensure their vote at any forthcoming elections, including the 2011 District and Parish Council elections, and proposed Referendum.
All British, Irish, European Union or qualifying Commonwealth citizens over the age of 16 resident at each address are required to supply their names and details so that they can be included on the register.
Individuals have some choice about who can buy details of their name and address. There are two versions of the electoral register, the full version and the edited version. When responding, individuals can choose to 'opt out' of the edited version, which anyone can buy. The 'opt out' box should be ticked if individuals want to protect the use of their personal details.
Where there are no changes to the names currently registered, the freephone or internet registration service can be used, which allows people to amend their opt out status, apply for a postal vote application form, and confirm all of the household's details in a matter of minutes. The system can be used where the registered electors' details have not changed and it is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the registration period.
If your property has not received a form, or you require further advice, contact the Electoral Services Helpline on 01304 872344.
