Eleven Empty Spaces - Exhibition Opens

Tuesday, 20 July 2010
Dover Museum is showing an exhibition as part of its oral history project 'Eleven Empty Spaces', to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the bombing at the Royal Marines School of Music and in remembrance of the 11 young men who were so tragically killed.

The emphasis of the exhibition is on the day of the bombing of the barracks in Deal on 22 September 1989, and the period surrounding that day. The exhibition is based on interviews with members of the community, recorded in 2009. Extracts from interviews have been used to tell the story through the memories of the people affected.

The exhibition also looks at the history of the Royal Marines in Deal from the early days to their departure in 1996, and the completion of the Memorial Bandstand and Gardens, with pictures and memorabilia from different periods in the Corps history.

The exhibition is now open at Dover Museum, and is showing until 2 October 2010, after which the text panels will be available for loan to schools and other venues. The project has been funded by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, with additional funding from Deal Town Council and Walmer Parish Council.
