Dover Esplanade Wins National Award

Thursday, 26 May 2011
Dover District Council is welcoming news that the stunning Esplanade on Dover Seafront has won a national award for architectural excellence. The redesigned Dover Esplanade is one of six exceptional structures across the South East to win in the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) 2011 Awards.

The new-look for the Esplanade, entitled 'Lifting Wave, Resting Wave, Lighting Wave', was designed by London-based architects Tonkin Liu on behalf of Kent County Council, Dover Harbour Board, Dover District Council, SEEDA and English Heritage. It was part funded by Sea Change, a Department for Culture, Media and Sport programme, led by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE).

RIBA President Ruth Reed said: "These well-designed buildings add huge value to the lives, prosperity, health and pride of their owners, users and communities, and I am delighted with this year's selection."

Cllr Paul Watkins, Leader of Dover District Council said: "Dover District again leads the way in major architectural design, building on the success of Dover Sea Sports Centre and Deal Pier. This is further evidence of how we continue to work with our partners to deliver new designs and meet the challenges of the future for Dover District."
