A new chaplaincy service is to be established for the port community. The new team will be on hand to provide a friendly face and listening ear to all those who pass through or work in the Port, be they staff, customers, tourists or visiting crews.
The current Anglican chaplain to the port, the Rev. David Ridley (Vicar of St Mary's Parish Church, Dover) is working with David Slater, a former lay chaplain at Heathrow Airport, in establishing a chaplaincy team which will comprise both clergy and laity to be on hand for those of any faith and those of none.
The new team, led by David Slater, will be a regular and visible presence in the daily life of the Port. The members of the Chaplaincy Team will also be 'on call' and available to respond to emergencies if required.
Bob Goldfield, Chief Executive said: "We were very keen to get this idea off the ground, we sensed a need to provide active day-to-day pastoral care, especially for staff and visitors. Crews visiting the port on cruise liners and cargo ships are often a long way from home and may wish to talk to someone unconnected with their work who is prepared to listen. I'm extremely pleased we can offer this service which will be of real benefit to our port community."
David Slater, new lay chaplain to the Port of Dover said: "I'm looking forward to my new role at the Port of Dover, building on my experiences elsewhere in providing a caring service to anyone who wishes to receive it."
