Opium with a street value of more than £160,000 has been seized at Dover by the UK Border Agency.
The drugs were discovered on Monday 24 October when Agency officers stopped a Bulgarian registered coach at the inward tourist controls en route to London. After questioning the drivers and passenger they discovered concealed in a holdall in the coach approximately eight kilos of opium.
Ivan Gocev a 28 year-old Bulgarian coach driver appeared at Folkestone Magistrates Court on 25 October charged with drug smuggling. He withheld his plea and will next appear at Dover Magistrates Court on 3 November.
Investigations by the UK Border Agency into the attempted importation continue.
