The White Cliffs Countryside Partnership, with support and funding from Dover Harbour Board are jointly carrying out a marine litter survey and clean-up at Shakespeare Beach on Sunday 18 September, as part of the Marine Conservation Society's (MCS) Beachwatch Big Weekend.
Volunteers are being encouraged to take to Shakespeare beach between 10 and 2 on Sunday 18th, meeting at the gate to the beach off Lord Warden Square to help give this secluded shingle beach a deep clean, as well as surveying the type of litter that has been washed ashore. This and the hundreds of other surveys taking place over the weekend throughout the country will help MCS target and tackle the main sources of litter at national and international levels.
Last year's Beachwatch Big Weekend saw almost 5,000 volunteers cleaning 376 beaches across the country, collecting over 330,000 pieces of litter.
Paul Sampson, Project leader for White Cliffs Countryside Partnership is preparing for the big day: "Clearing up the tide of marine refuse is a big job but with enthusiastic volunteers on board we can give this beach a well deserved clean as well as finding out exactly what type of litter is making its way by sea to this part of East Kent."
Vicki Case, Environmental Officer, Port of Dover said: "The beach clean is a good fun event for all the family. It is of huge benefit to the wildlife at Shakespeare Beach and just four hours will make such a difference."
