Temporary Solution Will Open Second Lane At A20 Roundhill Tunnels

Friday, 12 August 2011
Following persistent correspondence from the Port of Dover to the Roads Minister and the Highways Agency regarding the problem of congestion on the A20 at the Roundhill tunnels in Folkestone, the Highways Agency has now confirmed that its contractor, BBMM, will imminently be installing additional lightweight bridging plates to lane two of the coast bound carriageway, an idea proposed by the Port of Dover's Director of Corporate Operations.

The problems at the Roundhill tunnels have been affecting local and international traffic travelling on the primary road to Europe's busiest ferry port in Dover, and with the main holiday season in full swing the congestion looked set to deteriorate even further.

The temporary solution will create a "cars only" second lane, making a significant difference to traffic flow for local and tourist traffic.

Robin Dodridge, Director of Corporate Operations, Port of Dover said: "We are delighted that after constantly pressing the Minister and the Highways Agency, action is now being taken. With a permanent repair to the failed expansion joints some months away, we suggested the temporary solution to ensure that this key route to the UK's busiest ferry port is better able to cope during the summer season whilst easing the ongoing situation for the local community."
