More than 100 school children gathered at Dover Market Square yesterday to mark out a special occasion - as Dover District celebrated 100 days to go to the Olympic Games.
A range of partners, led by Dover District Council, worked together to arrange a morning of activities to celebrate the occasion, including the pupils from River Primary School standing in the shape of a giant 100 in the Market Square. Other activities included a workshop by Dover Arts Development (DAD) in Dover Discovery Centre, making colourful pom poms for the Relay route, and sports activities in the Market Square led by Vista Leisure. Pupils also enjoyed a range of interactive games on the Big Screen.
Celebrations were held across the country yesterday, as people around the UK are getting ready for the Games. This includes getting ready to celebrate the Games at Live Sites throughout the country, and watch the sporting action on the Big Screens. The permanent sites are run in partnership between London 2012, the BBC and local authorities, and supported by the National Lottery through the Olympic Lottery Distributor, partners BT and Lloyds TSB, and supporters Cisco and Cadbury.
Cllr Sue Chandler, DDC Cabinet Member for Community, Housing and Youth said: "We were very pleased to celebrate this occasion, with 100 days to go to the Olympic Games, and 91 days until the Torch comes to Dover District, and we thank all the pupils and teachers who worked together so well to make the display a success. We continue to work with communities and all our partners to encourage everyone to get involved as we prepare a warm welcome for the Olympic Torch Relay this summer."
LOCOG Chair Seb Coe said yesterday: "With 100 days to go to the start of the Games, millions of people are getting ready to do the best work of their lives and welcome the world this summer. There is a groundswell of support and excitement, not just in the UK, but internationally as the final countdown to the London 2012 Olympic Games begins. Whether it's the competing athletes or people getting ready to join their communities in supporting Torchbearers on the streets of the UK, the whole world is getting ready for London. Expectations are high, and we won't disappoint."
