Dover Town Investment Zone - planning application approved

Friday, 11 May 2012
A major foundation for investment in the future of Dover District is being welcomed following exciting news that the multi million pound redevelopment of the St James' area of Dover has been given the go ahead by planners.

A meeting of the Planning Committee last night (10 May 2012) approved the application to provide new retail floor space, 8 residential units, and other associated works within the area known as the Dover Town Investment Zone (DTIZ). This follows permission for a hotel building with restaurant/bars and other works, granted back in March.

Cllr Paul Watkins, Leader of Dover District Council said: "This is excellent news for Dover District and is a major example of continuing investor confidence in the area. It is another key foundation for the development and growth agenda for Dover, and will complement other emerging proposals and ensure that the community, residents and visitors alike can access the modern retail facilities without being encouraged to go elsewhere.

"Coming on the back of the recently published National Planning Policy Framework, it is a timely demonstration of how the Council, working in partnership with the private sector, can deliver quickly on the decisions that have to be taken to allow development to move forward. I congratulate all who have been involved in getting the scheme to this point and, like the community, look forward to this proceeding to the delivery stage."

John Laker of Laker Developments, representing Bond City said: "Receiving planning approval is very rewarding and another piece in the jigsaw of creating a vibrant shopping area in Dover town centre. We can now continue our discussions with retailers in the confidence that the scheme can be delivered within a set timescale. We can also move forward with increased assurance that the redevelopment of this site will become a reality."

Cllr Gordon Cowan, Leader of the Opposition, said: "I welcome this decision coming at this time. It is an example of team working and creates the opportunity for the people of Dover to get the much needed development of this key site. I hope that all those involved in the scheme will be able to get on and deliver it as soon as possible."
